Youth prospects
Those of you that follow things more closely, where do we stand with academy players making the grade in the next couple of seasons?

http://www.whufc.com/teams/development-squad/squad

Players like Samuelson, Oxford, Burke have received a bit of attention and seem to have had their ups and downs.

Martinez looks a player?

Cullen, Browne?

What about the others.

Re: Youth prospects
Two things which didn't happen this season might help in the future:

1 - a decent run in the League Cup.

2 - going 3 - 0 up in a game so one or two of them can be brought on as subs.

Re: Youth prospects
I'm afraid to say that Bilic has screwed up our youth prospects for a while now.
His disaster of a European campaign started all this and we are feeling it now still. We've backwards with the likes of Oxford and Burke when really they should be playing instead of Collins and Fonte.

Re: Youth prospects
Josh Cullen was recently awarded 'Players player of the year' by his team mates at Bradford City. It will be interesting to see if he is incorporated into our first team squad next season after two years out on loan.

What happened to Leo Chambers? Is he still with us?

The lad Powell is meant to be a decent player

Trundle

Those three you mentioned have struggled to get game time in the leagues below us. They probably werent good enough for the prem this season. Hence why we went to replace rather then promote from within

>>> would you risk your job just to give a prospect some game time?

Absolutely the key question. The answer is almost always no, and I can totally understand it.

That's why the policy must either come from above - from a DoF or in our case the board - or from a selfless manager with enough vision that they can see the massive benefits of it above just covering their arse week to week.

Re: Youth prospects
The ability to blood young players generally comes from surety over the managers position from the top level, and a strategy embraced by the whole club.

That is why the likes of Pochettino & Koeman have been able to do it; and why the our last two managers - with their bosses trapping off every two minutes - haven't.

Re: Youth prospects
Just a guess, but surely the likes of Giggs and Owen and even Noble are the exception, not the rule.

These few managed to be blooded very early and then go from strength to strength.

I think normally, it can do more harm than good to play kids before they are truly up for top level football, certainly when the stakes are so high. They are ten under as much prssure as the manager.

Oxford and Samuelsen are still both young and don't have to be rushed into our first team. Maybe next season, or maybe the season after, and they'll still be pretty young.

I do hope some of these prospects start coming of age soon though.

Me too. Massively disappointed in Bilic over that, then again, it maybe more a directive from the board.

Re: Youth prospects
As fans we're always asking ourselves these questions over many years, where's this player or that.

But the manager sees them most days so must know better than us. I suppose the question is would you risk your job just to give a prospect some game time.

I always thought Leo Chambers was going to be a player for us but he's disappeared.

Re: Youth prospects
I thought we had a great opportunity this season to give some game time to Oxford and, possibly, to the likes of Browne or Samuelson.

The manager has decided to go with experience bringing in Fonte and Snodgrass. I can understand why he did it, but it's probably not would I would have done given how highly rated they're meant to be.

Re: Youth prospects
Seems our loaned out players can be *the* standout performer in a league 1 squad but then struggle to even get games for a championship side. Maybe that's just a reality of how tough championship footfall is. It's a big step up.

We do seem to have spent years getting excited by really promising youth players only to see them move on to lower league clubs and fail to fulfil their potential.

How should the set up be changed? Ditch Westley?

scott_d 2:06 Tue Apr 25
Re: Youth prospects
I don't have much faith in the current set-up giving any them much of a chance.

Although to be fair, getting knocked out of Europe after we'd strengthened our squad for European football didn't help.

I'd like to see us introduce at least 1 or 2 of the youngsters as squad players next season. Such as Oxford, Burke, Cullen, Martinez.
